Anne of Green Gables

a. Why was Matthew shocked at what the station master told him?
A.The stationmaster told Matthew that one passenger was dropped off at the station for him. It was a little girl sitting by the shingles on the railway station. He was shocked as he was expecting for a boy to help him with farm work.

b. Describe the girl at the station.
A. The girl at the station was of about eleven year old, garbed in a very short, very tight, very ugly dress of yellowish-gray wincey. She wore a faded brown sailor hat and beneath the hat, extending down her back, were two braids of very thick, red hair. Her face was small, white, thin and much freckled; her mouth was large and so were her eyes, which looked green in some lights and moods and gray in others. The chin was very pointed and pronounced; her big eyes were full of spirit and vivacity; her mouth was sweet-lipped and expressive.

c. Why was the girl upset when she left the asylum and how did she cheer herself up?
A. The girl was upset while leaving the asylum because she had to wear a horrid old wincey dress. She cheered herself up by imagining her dress as the most beautiful pale blue silk dress and a big hat all flowers and nodding plumes and a gold watch, kid gloves and boots.

d. When the girl shut her eyes and opened it, what did she see? Did she guess rightly?
A. When the girl shut her eyes and opened it, she saw that they were on the crest of a hill. It was time of sunset and she saw a beautiful valley. She saw dimly lit house on the far left corner of the valley above which a star was shining. Yes, she guessed the Green Gables rightly.

e. Do you think Matthew wanted the girl to stay? Why?
A. Yes, Matthew wanted the girl to stay. When Matthew had taken the scrawny little hand of the girl, he decided to take the girl with him. When he thought about the girl’s disappointment after knowing the fact that she had been sent mistakenly that made him feeling uncomfortable. Much to his surprise he liked her talk and liveliness.

Q.2 a.“No, she didn’t- really …….must be in a dream.”

i. Who said these lines?
 A. The girl said these lines.

ii. To whom were these lines addressed?
A. She addressed these lines to Matthew.

iii. Why did the speaker think that she was in a ‘dream’?

A. The girl thought that she was in a dream because she felt extremely happy. She said that the house was as exciting and beautiful as she had imagined it.
