                                            Winter



a) Go through the poem and write down the rhyming pairs. (Example: mittens - kittens)
A.roof- hoof;
trees- breeze;
 ringing – singing;
 flower – hour

b. How does the poet know that its winter time again ?
A) The poet knows that it is winter again when the wind whistles through the roofs, snowflakes fall on trees, warm fires glow and she can hear the sound of the bells on sleighs and voices that sing –‘it’s Christmas’.


c) In the fourth verse, the poet says that she “loves spring”. Do you think she also likes winter? Why do you think so?

A. The poet likes the winter too for she uses words such as ‘gently’ to describe the falling of snowflakes, ‘warm’ to describe the fire; ‘sweet’ to describe the voices; ‘nice’ to describe the food.


d) Which is your favourite season? What are the signs (colours, smells, sights, etc...) that tell you, that it’s your favorite season again?

b) Try and create three alliterations of your own.
(Example: busy bee, the loyal lion etc...)

 towering trees,
wailing winds


c) Identify the figures of speech in the following sentences.

A.(i) ‘The wind whistles through the roof’
A.‘The wind whistles through the roof’ –personification / onomatopoeia

(ii) ‘I love silver springs that call back the flowers’
A.‘I love silver springs that call back the flowers’ – alliteration and personification
The poem also contains other figures of speech.
‘Clip clop go the horses hoofs’ – onomatopoeia
‘Warm fires glowing like sapphires’ – simile
